city
city
is applied in many English-speaking countries to any large town, and the official use of the term varies from country to country. In Britain it is properly used of a town that is declared to be a city by royal charter and has a cathedral. As a result cities vary greatly in size and population: Edinburgh (population 450,000), Oxford (population 135,000) and Wells (population 10,000) are all cities, as is the City of London, which is the business centre of the capital although no more than one square mile in area and having a resident population of a little over 7,000.
